A Japanese lord was deeply offended by another, and was thinking of a payback.
So, he invited his opponent for diner.
His opponent left no chance unused to complement his host for being so gracious and hospitable. And the dinner he cooked was extraordinarily well done.
At any rate, the opponent left and the Japanese Lord sat there with a gargantuan grin on his face.
His trusted hatamoto asked: why are you grinning?
Well, said the Lord, my opponent just ate the turd I produced this morning. And he ate it with gusto.
Meaning:
This is a good move by Japan.
It demonstrates the idiocy to cultivate ties with these CCP barbarians instead of the ROC and it sends a loud message to the world. A world in which Taiwan, or the ROC, has difficulty of maintaining diplomatic relations due to subversive CCP diplomacy.
China just lost face in a diplomatic skirmish.
But even more interesting: It seems CCP does not want to go the stretch alone. It needs: NK and Russia.
It is utterly possible that little Rocket man will tuck his tail and oblige. But I happen to think he will maybe rattle a sabre, but that is the end of it.
But taken one step further: What would be Russia's gain? A couple of Islands, totally nuked? Worth what? And on top surviving people hating their guts .... Note Soviet Russia only moved on Japan when it was safe to do so.
I fail to see gain for Russia. On top, their Southern neighbor, would very well think it would need: Eastern Russia as "Lebensraum". DId not the CCP all of a sudden claim to be a polar Nation a couple of months back?
Games are being played. And it may not have been aimed at Japan, but at those the CCP would need to accomplish such a feat.

China has threatened to take Japan's Senkaku Islands for years. So China would have an eye on them if China was successful in invading Taiwan. China would be emboldened if there was no push-back. China also claims the Ryukyu Islands, which Include Okinawa, belong to China rather than Japan. So they might also try to invade there.
Also if Taiwan becomes Chinese territory,the shipping routes to/from Japan/South
Korea would be disrupted. This would have a very serious effect on the economies
of Japan and South Korea.
If the CCP decided to follow through on this threat with an actual nuke attack,the CCP would be the agent of it's own destruction.
