I live in a highrise so "prepping" has been difficult but I have managed.
Water is the most important item. You can go for a while without food, heat, etc, but no water (liquid) means you're dead in a few days.
I bought 4 5-gallon containers to fill up and 2 10-gallon containers for my gray water needs.
Buying chicken stock, beef stock, veggie stock will help with hydrating foods like pasta and stuff. It will preserve your water supplies and add protein to foods. Stock can last up to a year, if frozen. I bought lots of soup, beans, oatmeal, rice, pasta, crackers, squeeze cheese (gross but for shelf life and can be a source of protein), peanut M & Ms (protein), dry roasted peanuts, and peanut butter.
I bought a small 1800W solar generator to power items too.
I am really hoping my biggest problem will be having to lug all of this to a food shelter after all this is over but I don't want to be caught unprepared. Better to be prepared and waste money than to NOT be prepared and all you have is worthless money to eat.
