You may have just never seen it before either cause you weren't looking when it happened or it looked more like a cursive lower case "L" from your perspective.
I would be more convinced if they drew a complete circle, shut off their smoke, then turned it on real quick to put the little line on the right corner similarly to Trump's air Qs. This, however is reaching.... hard.
I watched them every other year for 25 years and never saw a single plane break formation to draw q's.
