The more you breathe into the mask, the warmer and more moist it gets. There is really nothing left to the imagination as to whether or not the perfect environment for bacteria to grow would, in fact, contain a relatively high count of said bacteria.
Its because of your title I got the impression you meant the connection between bacteria and the mask per Fauci's abstract since bacteria collects in the mask. I apologize. I worked in research in a huge university medical center so I am quite aware of the process. As a matter of fact I used to submit Human Use Protocols to the NIH and on completion of the study submitted for publication in the medical journals.
I never suggested Fauci talked about masks (though they were used during the Spanish Flu, we have pictures).
