Sometimes it is just lazy graphic design. Like being a pumpkin spice basic bitch, or using Helvetica. It’s easier to copy than come up with your own symbols.
I didn't see the picture you posted until this morning. For the 666, my first thought is that many graphic designers will accidentally design something that looks like a penis. The client and designer won't even notice the phallic resemblance until weeks or months later. Happens more often than you'd think.
It WOULD be interesting to look into the history of Motel 6 to see if the 666 is more than coincidence. Maybe there is something like a Freudian Slip going on where the occult can't help but manifest out in the open.

I agree in most cases it is. If youbsee it too much with other symbols it gets harder to write off as lazy design.
