My toy poodle (who was only 2 lbs at the time) had a very bad reaction to the rabies shot. They give the same amount to a 100 lb dog that they do to a toy who weighs 2 lbs. Needless to say, he was vaccine exempt for many years where I used to live until I moved to an area where they told me if he bit anyone it would be up to the animal officer whether or not to put him down or allow him to live. They had rabies in the area.
I ended up going to a holistic vet who gave him a much smaller amt along with some benadryl to keep him from reacting. He still turned bright purple along his back leg. But he didn't have the same inflammation of his ears and loss of hair that he had before.
I had a small shelter toy poodle and they gave him a shot at the back of his neck on the morning I took him home . He became extremely sick , panting and shaking and drooling. I stayed up all night with him giving small syringes of water and baby food. When I got him into the vet he said if not for that he would have died. He developed A half dollar sized lump on his neck and all of the hair in the area fell out. My vet was always aware of his reaction to "vaccines " and used extreme caution always. I have been leery of shots since then. I can't imagine giving the same dosage regardless of size in humans.
I had a 1 pound Yorkie. Vet said he would only give her a partial dose of the rabies vaccine. Some vets will go by weight, and I thought I had found one. Asshole lied and gave her the full dose, and her kidneys failed and she died.
