Yeah, it was a weird place for them to be I thought. Not sure if NAS loads them in planes? I’m not sure how to tell a new tank from an old one, some had names or phrases on the barrels? Others numbers on the side, Is that common for new?
They are constantly being rebuilt at the Lima, Ohio tank plant, the only one in the US. As far as I know, no new hulls are being built at present but as long as a hull is reasonably straight and not too damaged, it can be refurbished and a “new” tank built on the hull.
As for where these are going, it’s anybody’s guess. It’s reserve training season, so there’s that. It is a really large number of tanks though.
I'm not even sure who is making the Abrams these days. Heavy armor was not an area of interest for me. They looked pretty new to me. All the older ones are all desert tan, at least for the last 20 years. The treads on the tracks looked new, but theoretically they could have been retracked. They can only load one M-1 into a C-17, so flying them would be pretty silly. They would have to get loaded onto a Roll-on-Roll-off ship (Ro-Ro). But i dont remember them having them up there. Its been nearly 20 years since I was at the Everett base, so it could be. I'm pretty curious though. Thats a lot of firepower
