Can't be in the Freemason's as a convicted criminal, they really don't dig that. That's one of the reasons why they get away with so much crap, it's not just that you're in with that crowd, they would have kick you out if you get convicted. Then you're a potential loose-end and they have to suicide your ass which is expensive and risky.
Stepping down, or resigning, to them is like a demotion. You still get to work for the company but they move you in a position away from the spotlight until they can use you for something else. They pretty much only kick you out of the club if you're no longer useful or if you betrayed their trust...at which point they normally just take you out.
