if you have security concerns, and you have more than one machine, especially one you are able to wipe and reload with no consequences (a raspberry pi is great for this application) there's no risk at all.

i wouldn't advise downloading any programs, but music and movies are super easy to find, share, and enjoy free of charge.
i haven't paid for cable EVER... and i watch whatever i want whenever i want.
if it's something i want to keep forever like a high quality DVD or blue ray rip... i'll torrent.
if it's just something i want to watch once i just use streaming sites.
