I remember as a kid driving through the desert with signs stating to beware of rodents, bubonic plague outbreak. I remember being freaked out and someone told me it’s not uncommon, we just don’t hear about it…I’m 43
Living conditions are a lot different than they were back in the 1400s. One of the worst contributors in the European countries was the rushes -- straw and dried grasses on the stone floors (acted like rugs to keep the chill off), which were a breeding ground for all kinds of bugs, including the plague-carrying fleas. I read that one of the safest places was the horse barns because fleas don't seem attracted to horses, they used straw for bedding and fleas won't live in straw (truth...I have horses).
I grew up in Maricopa and spent my summers in Overguard, definitely remember the plague in the desert. We traveled to the Grand Canyon, painted desert etc. for some reason that always stuck in my mind, that and the black rock, or whatever it’s called that looks like little hills. Someone told me they can be hollow and you could fall through and get trapped. Could be untrue, never though about looking into it.
