Setting aside wokeism and cable/streaming peacockery, there’s an underlying problem—Olympic sports are no longer special because of scarcity. TV in America used to only show major sports. Then more sports were viewable through cable TV channels. The world championships for various sports would be on TV outside of the Olympic years. The internet also contributed to making a lot of fringe Olympic sports more accessible.
What was once a rare novelty is now commonplace. Decades ago, people would stop everything they were doing to watch the Olympics because it was only on once every four years.
It used to be special because it was for amateurs. You watched the Olympics not to see professionals competing for money, but regular people competing for pride in their country. Now that they let pros in, it's just another competition, no special reason to watch.
Yet we don't send our best anymore.
Exactly, but they added a bunch of hipster nonsense like skateboarding. And have you heard, at the next Olympics they will have break-dancing as one of the sports LMFAO
The only event that still has this gravitas is the soccer world cup, though admittedly it's not very popular in the US
Breakdancing is a great Olympic sport because it's subjective and scores can be rigged, like in gymnastics.
