Well, being British, you were probably programmed to hate the idea of God. I watch a lot of British tv and I'd guess maybe 1 time out of 100 a religious figure was portrayed as kindly and decent. Most depictions are of fiendish, conniving, evil vicars and so forth. Did you watch Poldark? Eeesh. And apparently for centuries in England, people joined the clergy like they were joining a club or because their family expected it or some such.
And religion can be a problem. But knowing God is different than religion. If someone asks me what denomination I am, I say, "I'm non-denominational, like the apostles." Like just about everything else, some churches are fantastic and some are full of poison. Some times you gotta kiss some frogs before you find your prince.
