Can you locate which building they are taking off from? Mont of the ones I see don't have roofs like that. Either that or there should be other taller buildings around it.
Do those sunshine reflections on the building match the ones on the helecopter? They look pretty close but it's always good to check that
CWhere would there be that many trees in the foreground? Not a lot of trees in the area since it's a desert.
Finally, using the dirction the photo was taken from, can you find a domed building nearby that would work?
Looking myself to find out, will post if If I find more
That doesn't necessarily make it a real photo, the fact that it was used by the AP et.al... Though I was trying to explore the 'epsteins temple' thing in the background... someone suggested it was comms or something, which it could very well be, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't a photoshopped building added to the background or something as 'comms'... anyway I wanted to see if the building really existed close enough to be 'naturally' in the photo and it appears that it may be.
However, is the temple that much higher up than the hospital right behind it, which casts a much bigger shadow on satellite indicating it sticks up higher than the temple... yet we don't see it in the photo...
I can't find a hill with a building that has a domed roof anywhere. I'm starting to think that either the building is so recent that it isn't the satellite images that Google and Bing maps have, or else the photo wasn't taken in Kabul?
The Bing and Google satellite pics are quite different, with the Bing images appearing to be higher resolution and more recent.
Also check it out on Bing - totally different photos - and there's a building across the street which is either unbuilt in the google photo or bombed out. Not sure if that matters but it's interesting
I think my hunch is wrong - well maybe it isn't, but I think the photo lines up correctly.
If the helecopter is taking off from the embassy building with the lightest-grey roof a recttangle in the top left of the embassy. The photo looks to be taken from within the embassy compound one of the taller buildings on the bottom right. If you carry on that direction you can see the 'temple' in the background right near the 'sardar mohammad dawood khan hospital'
My hunch is it was photoshopped. Not sure exactly but here is a link to the embassy on google maps. https://goo.gl/maps/gH1yVzUq21zZMqmM8

If it is a photoshop, then (AP Photo/Rahmat Gul) is the one that photoshopped it.
This picture was used by many news outlets including business insider, the Washington Post, the NZ Herald and Yahoo news.
