After Vietnam I also thought surely, future generations won't be fooled again into these useless dead end overseas wars. Soldiers can be brave, soldiers can be gallant, patriotic, self-sacrificing, admirable in many ways but the young ones are not discerning.
As in politics, it's a mixed bag at the top. Unfortunately when career advancement, power and prestige become the main driver of a person they are liable to do anything. My guess, as a total outsider, is that it's a minority of officers at the top who reflect the kind of leadership the country needs. At the beginning of most wars the generals in charge fail miserably costing thousands of lives before they are replaced by true warriors and not career climbing phonies.
