Interesting. Sounds a lot like serfs, peasants, slaves, etc., not being taught to read. If you are uneducated or unintelligent, you are less likely to question authority and “buck the system”. Is it illegal for the upper class or just frowned upon?

The upper classes are the lukewarm muslims, they do pretty much what they want & rest is for show. Of course there are exceptions. Their society runs on INFLUENCE-money talks. Bribery (“wastah”-influence) rules the day.
