So I got home today and thought something was burning. I got online and saw two news articles saying there was a small chemical leak last night.... about 20 miles away from where I am! (yeah, small leak my ass) It reeks, I have a headache and immediately started coughing. Turns out Lubrizol (owned by Warren Buffet) has been leaking chemicals since yesterday. Local news is barely covering it and they retracted the original statement saying it was Hydrogen Sulfide. I cant find many answers since I dont have main stream social media but I would like to know what the fuck I am breathing. Anyone around the area with any info?

Harris County Pollution Control had tweeted: "A shelter in place order has been issued from La Porte Office of Emergency Management."
They later added: "Chemical leak at Lubrizol Plant 41 Tidal Rd. Deer Park, Texas.
"The chemical compound released is hydrogen sulfide. "
One local tweeted that their "eyes are burning."
The Lubrizol Plant said in a statement: "Tonight an odor incident tied to a rail car vapor release occurred at our Tidal Rd. facility. Other than potential noticeable nuisance odors, there is no impact or risk to the surrounding community.
"We are actively working to resolve this matter, including working w/local authorities to keep them advised. We apologize for any inconvenience."
Thanks! I found they released a statement saying it was not hydrogen sulfide it was Methyl Mercaptan and a hell of a lot of it. Will keep you updated if i grow another arm or leg lol
Oh, that makes sense. That's the odorant they put in natural gas that gives it the rotten eggs smell. Just a few drops are really potent. I can't imagine a train car relief valve blowing. I'm surprised they didn't shut down local plants too. That stuff is nasty. No wonder it spread so far downwind.
Yeah.. that part is true from my research. One expert I talked to is still very skeptical and saying that it is potent (he said its a loud smell) but he also said there is no way that a railcar could leak enough to cover that large a radius for over 24 hours. A lot of people are reporting it got stronger at around 3 AM. I am guessing they werent done with their release and started it back up in the middle of the night. It was supposed to rain and never did. Probably planned to release it while it was raining like they usually do and miscalculated. 0 mph winds, 90% humidity and no rain was not what they planned on.
