Never happened.

Iranians wanted to publicly thumb Carter's eye and (mostly) avoid the hell Reagan was promising.

Best way for Iran to avoid Reagan's promised retaliation without appearing to be afraid?

Act like they just wanted to humiliate Carter and bail.
