Yesterday August 25th. Near downtown Los Angeles. Roughly 3pm. Driving in traffic, noticed 3 large military helicopters apparently flying in formation. As I got closer, noticed a 4th chopper, but different type. Even curiouser, the appearance was that the 3 military choppers were forcing the smaller copter to land. Obviously don't know what exactly happened, but visually it looked like 3 huge dragonflies hunting a mosquito, or 3 large bouncers backing Danny Devito into a corner. Looking up the profiles on military.com, I'm guessing they were UH-1 Iroqois or possibly even Sea Dragon size. The smaller helicopter was yellow/orange and looked a little smaller than a standard news chopper, totally overshadowed by the military craft that seemed to be forcing it down.
Somebody trying to flee? Knowledge, speculation, wisecracks all welcome below!
I really wanted to get out my phone, but ... Impossible at the time to do safely. But today's phone cameras are awesome if the lighting is right. And they were far off.
The Marines are the only U.S military branch to have any of the UH-1 series still in active service. Specifically the UH-1Y Venom. Which is a light troop transport/gunship. Which would likely be more suited to chasing down a small light helicopter.
Doubtful it was a Sea Dragon. The Sea Dragon is the Navy variant of the Ch-53E Super Stallion. Which is a heavy lift helicopter. Not exactly the kind of thing you’d send on an interception mission. Though it would have the size and bulk to force a landing of another smaller helicopter provided the pilot was willing to risk a collision.
Probably the venom, then. I really only got a good sense of scale, as I was moving, they were moving, and trees and trucks got in the way.
