I was optimistic about maybe white hats were controlling this Afghan. situation but after today's events I am having a hard time rationalizing this in any logical mindset.

In the history of warfare, no side has ever been in 'control', this is no different.
That said it is optics and it sounds better and is simpler than 'we are winning every battle and the enemy is in retreat but fighting is still explosive', don't quite work when people aren't even aware of the Chinese attempt at invading the continental US let alone that there is an ongoing ww3...
Control is a relative term and whitehats are pretty much dictating the terms of every battle but war isn't exactly blessed with an abundance of control even when everything is going your way...
