I was optimistic about maybe white hats were controlling this Afghan. situation but after today's events I am having a hard time rationalizing this in any logical mindset.

Remember, brother, you can worship and serve from anywhere. God is in all places. But, we are indeed warned to not only keep out faith strong but also to keep the company of each other to that purpose.
Many are being misled, and that's frustrating, but the Enemy is trying to turn God's people away from Him. Those who turn away willingly will stay there, so keep yourself on the righteous path. Those who were misled, the lost sheep, we have to keep spreading the truth to save them.

I've never gone to church aside from weddings, funerals and a few occasions being dragged into a service by others. I just never had the "worship gene" it seemed. It's only in recent years that I started to feel some sort of spirituality but I still have no desire to sit in a church service and be preached to plus there are a lot of scammy churches out there that are just fleecing their flock. As I've said to others who tried to pull me into it "if God can hear me at any time then I don't need a special building if I feel the need to talk to him, I can do it anywhere and where I feel comfortable doing it."
100% agreed. The Church is not a building. It's the people.
Something that has helped me strengthen my walk with God a lot lately is a new way that I read my Bible. Any time I see someone reference a Bible verse, I'll go read the context, often the entire chapter. It's led me to some amazing stories, powerful lessons, and a hunger to know more that I thought had died out in me.
It turns out that part of my spirit was just dormant, waiting for now. Praise God. If it's interesting to you, give it a try. You may be surprised how often you see random verses quoted in daily life and media.
You may not be surprised how often they're completely out of context.
