So the bit of old T - shirt people have turned into some sort of grubby face covering does absolutely nothing, in fact it's worse, the moisture from breathing through it all day actually attracts and holds bacteria and such like. The sheer amount of touching of face masks also mitigates any slight protection the wearer might perceive.
In essence, if you can smell farts through underwear and say a pair of jeans, yeah well the T - shirt made face covering stops nothing, indeed you might as well wear your underwear on your head for all the protection it gives!
