I’m less inclined to believe grand conspiracies and instead accept the simple answer. Humans are endowed with both the Holy Spirit and the spirit of the devil.

So it’s just simply humans being evil, as they have always done. Greed and lust overpowering the free will to be a good person.

That’s why this shit keeps repeating itself, it’s in our nature.
