Why did we use commercial aircraft to rescue Americans?

But do they fly them into confirmed hostile territory? (not being snarky, I really don't know).
Not normally. They fly the military from the US to safe-ish hubs in Qatar, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, etc. Military aircraft then ferries the troops from those hubs to the hostile area.
It says in that message they aren't flying into HKIA. They're flying into safe countries where the evacuated are staging.
Fair enough but is that something that we've always done or is it new?
Probably, they're using centcom heavy lift assets to get out of Afg. You'd want to keep those in theater if possible for other operations.
Thank you. Yes, safe staging areas. I was asking if we ever used civ. airlines where we know there is combat. It just seemed to me questionable that we could guarantee any areas safe in that region.
