You don't want to buy phones from carriers, you want to buy them from manufacturers. That gives you the most control.

I pay 10 dollars every 3 months just for cell service (200 min w/ roll over) and paid 200 for my phone.

Diminishing returns. Phones under 300 dollars do everything I need. I never had a phone that didn't break or become obsolete within 5 years. I'm not spending 2000 on something today I may drop tomorrow.
