I do love Braveheart! We need to nail down a true American to refer a kin to the same maybe? It needs to be an American who fought and died on American soil against heavy odds like William faced. I’ve always thought our Braveheart would be Danial Boone or Davy Crockett at The Alamo. Or maybe one of the Native American leaders out of the more recent late 1880s-early 1900s like Captain Jack, Sitting Bull, Geronimo, or Crazy Horse. Or one of the many great men that actually fought at Pearl Harbor, maybe one of the known ships gunners, or one of the 2-3 pilots of Pearl Harbor that fought off the Japanese? Thoughts?
I'd like to go back to the Revolutionary war, since this very much seems like we need a new one.
Any of the signers of the Declaration of Independence: Some lost their homes, were hunted and threatened with death.. Part of the 6th grade reading curriculum from the older Abeka books has a piece on the signers Called Signers of the Declaration of Independence. Not all of them lost their lives, but all had a price on their heads. John Hancock, for example, originally had a price of five hundred pounds on his head... (and this back when a pound was actually sterling silver!) Captain Richard Stockton was hunted down, captured, then put in prison and treated so badly he died. A similar fate came to Arthur Middleton who also died before the close of the war. Judge John Morton was abandoned by all his friends for not making peace with King George. They would not even reconcile with him on his deathbed. He left these prophetic words for them: "Tell them that they will live to see the hour when they shall acknowledge it to have been the most glorious service that I have ever rendered to my country."
Here's an example of a German citizen who enlisted in the US Army and received his citizenship while serving in a combat zone during WW2.
Hermann Bottcher represents a great example of an immigrant who gave his life for his new home country.
