Never know what's going on in the background. Many possible reasons.

Certainly could be for the reason given.

Could be that the party doesn't want to dilute votes for its "best" candidate (something the Republicans are notorious for doing).

The electorate is becoming more inquisitive about politicians' financial, business and social dealings. Some won't want to put up with the hassle. Others, who have something to hide, will want to avoid such inquiry as it could uncover the skeletons in their closets.
