Something about it just gives me the creeps. Like it’s a weird vibe - as if I’m being intentionally distracted or some “look here, not here” type shit

I agree and refuse to watch anything with them. I get the creeps watching them do their hand signs. I definitely think there's more to it than just for deaf people.
