Oddly, since the first mention of 'when do you play the trump card' I was always thinking about those old movies where they were playing poker.

At the key moment, the bad guy plays the hand and thinks they won and as they start pulling the chips to themselves the good guy says "not so fast" as they flip the card to show that the victory is lost.
