I've always wondered if possession by spirits was also physically manifested with actual parasites in these people. Might explain the cannibalism and such.

I totally agree on the free will. But after turning your back on God for so long and proverbially selling your soul, is there a physical manifestation in the form of a parasite.

You are denying the physical manifestations of these beings though. They can manifest in many ways, one is surely sickness.
