It's a memorial or Flanders poppy. This started after WWI. "In Flanders' fields the poppies blow/Between the crosses, row on row."

It's a poppy for Remembrance Day to honor veterans, the same as our Veterans Day. Have you never bought a small paper poppy for your lapel or shirt from the American Legion?

Poppies are everywhere growing wild in the fields of Britain and Europe. A famous poem, "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae about WWI.
