No need to separate the two. He was stationed at Pendleton where AITB is located (that was where he was battalion commander before being fired). If you serve for 17 years you are gonna have several tours on the East and west coasts.

Either way, you are totally right that marines were really disappointed when mattis went turncoat. I had looked up to him so much before then
