'Star Trek' appears to have been prescient about a number of things...communicators (cellphones), and then there was that story on STNG about people getting addicted to a game and how it affected their thinking (video games). There may be others that I don't remember.
It seems to me like the cabal has been fighting to open the gates of hell for all history and succeeded some time around the early 20th century. What we're seeing now is like the gradual Hellification of earth.

That's a plausible theory. Personally I think it's the super A.I. that is running planet earth that is the root cause of clown world. I think the A.I. has a defective humor algorithm chip, and the aliens who built the A.I. to manage earth can't see the problem. Humor is an alien emotion to them. Result- clown world.
It's likely part of a strategy to create or foster events and experiences that are contradictory or overly absurd which renders anything in the mediaplex nearly indistinguishable from static on a TV screen or white noise from a radio. A way of allowing it to cancel itself out or spin into oblivion. Under these conditions, the only reliable solution will most likely be authentic, from the bottom up rather than top down culture, effectively allowing the monster to drown in it's own vomit.
