Notice that there is no biblical proof of a group consisting of hundreds of thousands of people "wandering" around in the same 4,000 sq.mile area of desert for 40-years.
There would be strong archaeological evidence of a civilization "wandering" for that amount of time in a known area.
That may sound good in a textbook sense, but anyone who has actually spent a decent amount of time outside could tell ya that you wouldn't find much of anything from a group of wandering people spanning thousands of miles thousands of years ago.
You can go to a few square miles that were inhabited a couple hundred years ago and find no evidence of it unless you're seriously spending time and searching and you know what you're doing. Nature reclaims man's territory very quickly. If 'scientists' really wanted to verify it, they probably could with time, but that's not going to be an easy feat and most scientists would rather theorize on the Israelites gender than verify the bible, these days.
