I hear's ya, yes their brains are so riddled they have multiple complex issues. He would have no problems murdering a box of chocolate Cheerios (cereal killer, I'm just fooling with ya) if he woke up in a bad mood! Serial killers have zero ability to inwardly reflect, and can justify anything they want!
