In order to buy into veganism you have to buy into the lie that as omnivores we can eat whatever we want and if you have a choice to eat in a way that kills nothing sentient, then that is an ethical imperative. I can tell you as someone who has been there, we can't choose to make ourselves different than we are. We need meat.
Oh, believe me. This was a discussion I had with my husband many times. He really wanted to transition to only eating things that didn't kill plants - fruits freely given from plants etc. We had a huge argument over whether or not we could eat the spinach that he'd grown and become attached to. Luckily, we are both happy meat eaters now.
