I see what you are saying, but I really do think TNG was the worst offender in that sense. It was like when you go see a play, the people have to over-emphasize emotions so that even those in the back rows can get it.
If I were to guess is my general criticism of star trek vs Battlestar Galactica. Where Star Trek had roles that were far more robotic and like an idealization of what people in the future could be like, where Battlestar had a crew of people that are far more relatable.

Yep I see what you mean. That's why I liked Farscape a lot because the characters were much more relatable.
