So what games are they playing by explaining this to the media instead of co-operating with the auditors to understand this?
These were simply anomalies that needed answers.
Still doesn't explain the rest like missing signatures etc.
Correct. The county unfortunately wanted the audit to be political and has some things to hide. AZ Mirror is of course part of the game too.
But from what I can see they appear to have the facts right on this issue so it's up to us to be aware of it and re-focus our arguments.
Apparently the firm that scanned the envelope images, transformed any solid group of pixels into white space. You can see this quite readily by examining an original mailin ballot. All of the thicker text has been whited out. The border around the signature has been whited out. And of course, the interiors of the arrows have been whited out.
This was done intentionally. I don't buy the argument that it saved any space (they are likely just using a shitty compression alg). But it is what it is, and we need to be aware of it when discussing the fraud.
"When Runbeck Election Services, the company that prints Maricopa County’s ballots and envelopes, scans the outbound and incoming early ballot envelopes, it does so in a binary format that only uses black and white pixels, with no gray shading. To save space with its file sizes and increase the speed at which ballots and envelopes can be scanned, the binary format doesn’t fill in blocks of solid color, said Jeff Ellington, Runbeck’s CEO.
So, the solid black triangles that point to the signature box on the envelopes become white triangles with black borders. All of the ink inside the triangles and other shapes, including any parts of the approval stamps that happened to be made over the triangle, are removed. The Arizona Mirror was shown examples of this technology from the scanning process of Arizona and Colorado ballot envelopes at Runbeck’s Phoenix facility. "

EDIT: So the reason the verification stamp disappears is because it would have been dark ink over dark ink.
That is correct but the bigger point in all the pics they showed was that there was no signature.
The paper does cover some of those instances as well (for example a person may have signed in the wrong location). Probably not to the point of explaining all cases though.
