For the Orthodox, Saddam was a better leader than what could have been. He kept the Muslims in check from trying to persecute them, there were a lot of sects that wanted to see the destruction of Orthodoxy. For whatever reason Saddam really dotted on the Orthodox Church.
Oh yeah, Saddam wasn't the "good" guy, but he wasnt any more bad than your run of the mill dictators all around the world. He kept stability in the region that pretty much no one else could because he knew the sects, he knew how to control them, etc
