Have you tried FB IPs? I found a list via a brief search online and the IPs don't work. Could this be FB being down both at the DNS and server level?

503 is generally a bad gateway, which means it is trying to forward the request over a server (usually a load balancer) to the actual server but can't. This is usually because the servers have all crashed but can also be due to the servers being overloaded.
