Incorrect. The domain exists. It just currently is not registered with any IP address in DNS.

localhost could be the address of the script running on the same dns server. I have checked it against a number of DNS servers. Same result.

Sort of like this...

You own a cell phone. You decide to switch carriers and elect to NOT keep your phone number (you will get a new phone number with your new carrier). Imagine that during that transition from old carrier + old number to the new carrier + new number that your phone is temporarily unavailable, and that no phone number can reach it.

This is sort of like that, where your phone is Facebook's servers, except Facebook didn't plan on making this change.

Facebook.com is still registered domain. NS, MX records still published. The name servers at Facebook are probably on prem and down due to IPs not being advertised.
