The origin of the 2020 death rate being lower than previous years was a Johns Hopkins study conducted by a Professor in Economics using Federal Government data. And throughout the pandemic, Johns Hopkins has been cited as best source of information.
Sorry, don’t remember the Professor’s name at the moment. Naturally this made DS heads explode and the revisionist historians went to work immediately. They demanded the student paper which published the study retract it. Then fact checkers started “debunking” the study.
It’s doubtful the available data at the time is archived so it’s difficult to validate the Professor’s conclusions. But on the surface it is logical, the majority of people who died with covid did so due to co-morbidities. Therefore, covid would not necessarily cause excess deaths year over year because most of the people who died with covid were at the point where one additional illness would cause them to pass away.
