If you believe in Hell and divine punishment after death....

...The suffering you incur on earth is detracted from your punishment in the hereafter.

If you want the maximum punishment for the Anti-Claus and his fellow cronies...

Make their death quick and painless.

So they have less excuses to escape the full penalty of Hell.
