I use an Alcatel OneTouch, but basic phones are much of a muchness to be honest.

If it has a full blown operating system and touch screen etc. then steer clear unless you are happy to jailbreak them and install vpn blocking software.

edit: make sure you can remove the battery as well.

I've never owned a smart phone. I still use a dumb Nokia.
