I watched an interesting documentary a while ago...can't remember the title or where I watched it. But the basic premise is that suburban America is basically a Ponzi scheme. Initially, people purchasing property combined with Federal dollars provides the capital for the initial infrastructure, but twenty, thirty years down the road when water mains start failing, bridges crumbling, etc., etc., there is no way the townships can come up with the money to make repairs. Town leaders and/or county commissioners keep trying to scam more people to move to the area, so they can keep the pyramid from toppling, but it's a losing proposition in the end.
A grim assessment of America...
The Youtuber NotJustBikes has a few videos showing this.
Most of our cities are screwed because of how they are built, and how it would be almost impossible to recoup the amount needed for maintenance, as sometimes you would need to tax the populace living there 100% of their wages to fit it.
Hell big box stores and their miles and miles of parking and roads leading to them are also extremely costly and debt inducing.
