The sun spits out CMEs all the time, and sometimes towards the Earth. So nothing new there. The MSM highlighting a potentially minor event (like this one) is what we need to watch for, and point out what to expect, if anything. If NASA says a minor event is coming, and the grid goes down, yeah, that wasn't because the Sun farted at the Earth.
There was a fairly big event back in 1989 that knocked out some transmission lines from Canada to NY. My understanding is that the grid has been modified to prevent that sort of thing from happening again.
A big event, like the one that affected telegraph lines in the 1800s is unusual, but it won't go unnoticed either. Not when the whole US sees the northern lights at night.
