Its not just taboo. Some places will fire you for it. Its ALSO to keep people from bickering over pay discrepancies between individuals. I had a place that was run by a family that paid their sons more for the same job, despite no extra experience. It was not far from minimum wage, so don't get wound up over it! How did I find out? I dug around in their files one day while closing because I could.
