I live in a highrise and a gas generator is not possible. I chose to buy a solar powered "generator". It has 1800 watts and a couple of solar panels. Very discrete as I can put it on my patio 30 floors up and charge it.
That is why I got it. I hated to spend the money but I put it on a 1 yr same as cash finance plan (no interest), I divided the amount and make monthly payments. Likely I wont end of having to pay it off when the SHTF anyway. It will provide enough power for a fridge and charging phones and radios. It is not dependent on any other resource other than the Sun.
I know a lot of people say "get out of the city" but that is just not realistic for most. You have to work with what you got.
I think most people are going to have to hunker down and be very quite in their homes.
Just don't draw attention to what you may have saved up.
Luckily I got one way into my home and 3 levels of security before you can get in front of my door. My last line of defense is blowing holes through my front door for anyone who tries to get in and take my stuff.
May I ask, what did something like that cost ? I’m a single woman ..I’ve bolted up my yard with high fence trees etc ..I have a freezer and refrigerator in my garage, I bought last nov 3 once we went through the steal I knew this day would come. My fridge freezer is packed, my cabinets and totes in garage are packed , I have water a wind up radio , batteries and a satellite phone! I have firewood and kerosine lamp and heater ..I’m in SD so we don’t get real cold ! All I would need is generator
As for the solar generator, the term generator is a misnomer. Generators are motors that run on fuel and create energy.
This is a battery that simply stores energy. You can power it up from a wall charger, if there is power, or from the solar panels. There is no noise, it is very heavy but it has wheels and a handle. There are several brands out there but I am on a budget so I settled for Natures Generator. They have several set up and models. I went with the single unit by itself ($749) link. There is a model that has a solar panel with it ($999) but you can buy solar panels for much less than the $250 difference. I bought a solar panel for $65.00 on ebay, which will enable me to have more solar panels (faster charging and replacement). You just have to get the proper connectors.
Nature's Generators are sold by several reps and the price does not change but the key is to finding the right financing deal. Like I mentioned, I bought it through PayPal which offers a 1 yr same as cash deal. It allows me to finance it (monthly payments) and retire the debt without paying interest.
I am a single woman too and we got to stick together. I had to craft a prep plan that fit my scenario. I live in a major metro area on the 30th flr. My circumstances just do not lend themselves for me to live in the country. I wish I did though. SD, wow. I bet that is cool, no pun intended. Love to hear what it is like living there.
Sounds like you got a great set up. I even found a atmospheric water generator. It makes water out of air. WOW. Talk about being completely off the grid. It is pretty expensive and big unit so I have held off on buying.
Looking for friends on this site is hard so maybe we could stay in touch. Talk about some of this craziness?

No problem, Fren. Sorry for the long post.
