This is true and almost all of America was carved out of the wilderness by our hands.
That said, there was a lot more Native American development here when the settlers arrived than most people realize. The natives had towns, roads, canals, fields, orchards, farms, mines, etc... But by the time the first settlers got here, all of this was in complete ruin after diseases had wiped out the Indians over the preceding century. It was very much like a post apocalyptic landscape. And we built on top of it. The first settlers spoke of finding whole towns full of only skeletons, with food still in their stores and edible... You'll also find that a lot of our modern roads today were actually built directly on top of Indian roads. Especially along rivers.
