Effective brainwashing is engineered. It is most effective when the lie becomes the identity of the target. To undo such control, you are not only crushing the belief, you are crushing the identity. Very difficult, sometimes impossible.

ie: "I'm a Feminist! I'm an Anti-Fascist! I'm an Environmentalist! I'm a Climate Warrior!"
