My first thought was animals got to the body and tore the meat off the bones.... But the "found alongside personal items" part kinda throws that idea out the window unless the animals were very neat eaters.
I have. That's why I'm assuming something would rip him apart or drag him away and not leave him next to his notebook and backpack and stuff. Maybe buzzards would leave him there but I just figure finding a skeleton next to a backpack seems like finding a hijackers passport in the crater of a plane crash when you can't find most of the plane.

Or finding a blackbox and no plane wreckage, perhaps.
Are their animals polite there?
